Single Use Support Launches Next-Generation Controlled-Rate Blast Freezer

  • Single Use Support introduces the advanced RoSS.BLST, a blast freezing and thawing platform designed to deliver maximum process consistency and product quality for high-value biologics. With enhanced performance, increased capacity and recipe-driven freezing protocols down to -80°C, the system sets a new benchmark for reliable, scalable freeze-thaw processes across all single-use bioprocessing container formats.

Single Use Support announces the release of its next generation RoSS.BLST, engineered to provide highly consistent freeze-thaw performance for biologics. The upgraded system enables CDMOs and biopharmaceutical manufacturers to strengthen product protection, improve process reproducibility and increase overall operational efficiency.

Controlled freezing for maximum product quality

Cold chain management remains one of the most critical steps in bioprocessing, where non-uniform or inefficient freezing can compromise drug substance integrity. RoSS.BLST mitigates these risks with fully 21 CFR Part 11 compliant recipe-driven freezing protocols, helping to minimize batch-to-batch variability.

Advanced airflow management performs a complete air circulation every 2.5 seconds, enabling rapid and uniform temperature distribution. This highly dynamic circulation supports faster heat transfer, resulting in more powerful and consistent freezing profiles and improved product quality.

A more efficient direct cooling system paired with a Siemens control system accelerates pull-down to target temperature and shortens overall runtime, enabling faster batch freezing cycles with lower energy demand. Designed for high loading volumes, RoSS.BLST supports up to 192 × 2 L bottles per batch, reaches target temperatures down to -80°C and combines rapid pull-down performance with optimised electricity and cooling water consumption.

“With our next-gen RoSS.BLST, we’re transforming the freezing of bulk-packaged drug substances into an efficient, reproducible and scalable process,” said Markus Fürhapter, CTO of Single Use Support. “Fully controlled freeze-thaw cycles translate into consistent process reliability, without added complexity.”

More capacity. Same footprint. Greater flexibility

Beyond performance, RoSS.BLST redefines space efficiency in existing bioprocess facilities. With a best-in-class ratio of usable chamber volume to footprint, it provides 30% more usable chamber capacity than comparable blast freezers.

Built with a stainless-steel, hygienic design for easy cleaning and maintenance, RoSS.BLST combines high-performance forced-air blast freezing with a modular interior that accommodates a wide range of bioprocess container types and batch configurations. Supporting decarbonisation initiatives, Single Use Support’s freeze-thaw platforms use natural refrigerants with low environmental impact.

Integrated for end-to-end cold chain operations

As part of Single Use Support’s end-to-end cold chain ecosystem, RoSS.BLST connects with RoSS.ULTF ultra-low temperature storage freezers and protective secondary packaging solutions for single-use bottles (Bottle RoSS) and 2D bioprocess containers (RoSS® shell). Together, these solutions help safeguard drug substances from filling through freezing, long-term storage, and transport.
