This article by Aziza Manceur from National Research Council Canada describes a project whose goal was to test insulin as a booster for cell growth and virus production. Insulin was chosen for many reasons. It is already used in cell culture, and it is approved by regulatory agencies. So this is in line with our mission to look for strategies that can be implemented quickly in industry. Insulin is also known for its anti-apoptotic and mitogenic characteristics. We expected that insulin would improve the growth profile of the cells that we work with, but its effect on virus production was unknown.
