SONOTEC with new flow sensor generation at INTERPHEX

SONOTEC presents its new non-contact flow meter SONOFLOW® CO.55 V3.0 at one of the major bioprocessing and pharma events in the USA. Besides outstanding measurement accuracy and the highest clamp-to-clamp repeatability, the ultrasonic sensor combines measurement excellence and state-of-the-art industry 4.0 features.

With a measurement accuracy of up to 1% and hardly any drift at zero flow, SONOFLOW CO.55 V3.0 is the world’s most accurate clamp-on sensor. By redesigning the measurement channel architecture SONOTEC has also succeeded in significantly improving the clamp-to-clamp repeatability. In doing so, a single-use tubing set can conveniently be replaced and re-clamped without having effects on the measurement results of the sensor.

Accurate and reliable measurement data for DoE modeling and process intensification

As SONOFLOW CO.55 V2.0 has been successfully implemented in different bioprocesses with medium and large flow rates, the redesign of the new SONOFLOW CO.55 V3.0 generation focused particularly on the measurement performance in the low flow ranges. Especially during process development with small scale applications and even in the field of cell and gene therapy (CGT), it is crucial to measure low flow rates reliably. Accurate flow data is the basis for modeling bioprocesses and increases process efficiency for the development of biopharmaceutical therapeutics. The generated data can be used for modeling and data analytics tools to obtain process knowledge and make predictions. Analyzing and validating measurement data can lead to higher process robustness, process control, and process monitoring with quality by design (QdD) and process analytical technology (PAT) applications.

“During the development of the new sensor generation, we focused on different aspects of the biotech industry making sure to meet the market-specific requirements. Process operators benefit from the compact sensor design with integrated electronics and several interface options for all common pumps, data loggers, and PLCs. Analysts conveniently collect accurate real-time flow data at various process steps for process intensification, e.g., to design new process concepts and to create the design of experiment (DoE) models“, says Melanie Schmidt, Business Unit Director Non-Invasive Fluid Monitoring at SONOTEC.

Advanced technology and ease of use

The flow meter is ideally suited for single-use and hybrid environments in the bioprocessing industry. Hence, customers benefit from highly accurate flow measurement in the complete production cycle – from upstream to downstream applications including complex fill and finish processes. The clamp-on technology offers the possibility to easily detect flow rates on flexible silicone tubing. Based on a unique sensor platform, the compact flow meter is available in different designs with aluminium and GMP-compliant stainless-steel housing, as well as in multiple sensor sizes suitable for most industry-standard bioprocess tubing.
