From a scientific concept to the development of novel therapies
At Eppendorf, we recognize the transformative potential of cell and gene therapies in developing life-saving treatments for previously incurable diseases. These therapies utilize innovative tools like stem cells, T cells, and viral vectors. However, the journey to develop these novel therapeutics comes with its own set of challenges. A focus shift from autologous to allogeneic applications expands the potential reach of these therapies, but brings more challenges, as the processes need to be standardized, reproducible, and scalable. At Eppendorf, our aim is to empower bioprocess experts in cell and gene therapy development on their upstream bioprocessing journey.
- Producing large amounts of cells: We understand that producing large quantities of cells efficiently is crucial for your work. Our stirred-tank bioreactors, including the BioBLU® c Single-Use Bioreactors, are designed to meet this need. They offer scalability from 100 mL to 40 L, allowing you to develop and test processes in small volumes to save resources. Aided by our innovative software solutions, scaling up to larger volumes becomes seamless and efficient.
- Creating an optimal growth environment: We know that creating the right environment for cell growth is vital. Our 3D-stirred bioreactors can provide a more physiologically relevant microenvironment for your cell cultures, with improved mass transfer, nutrient distribution, and waste removal through perfusion. Our bioreactor systems allow for higher cell densities, which can reduce the overall time and costs for cell expansion.
- Develop better processes faster through digitalization: In cell therapy development, the cell itself is the product, making a thorough understanding of the production process essential. We support you with our advanced software solutions, DASware control and BioNsight cloud. These tools empower you to collect and contextualize data on bioprocess parameters, cell growth, and cell characteristics and to easily collaborate on them with your colleagues. BioNsight cloud provides a seamless journey from data to insight through its integration with DataHowLab. This bioprocess data analytics and modelling solution empowers you to generate powerful AI-enabled insights from your process data. Let us help you unlock the potential of digitalization to advance your research!
- Save time and reduce risks: We understand the importance of efficiency and reliability in your workflow. Parallel control of multiple bioreactors allows you to run numerous experiments simultaneously. This speeds up process development, enables for process scale-out, and fosters standardization. Our single-use bioreactors eliminate the need for time-consuming cleaning and sterilization processes, reducing the cross-contamination risk, streamlining your workflow and reducing downtime between batches.

Bioprocess equipment at the forefront of innovation
We take the approach of listening to and understanding our customers’ challenges and pain points to ensure that Eppendorf Bioprocess equipment is always at the forefront of innovation and meeting the changing needs of the market. A close collaboration with Dr. Robert Zweigerdt from the Medical School Hannover in Germany is one example. Robert is a leading scientist developing bioprocesses for the clinical translation of cells derived from human pluripotent stem cells. We worked closely with Dr. Zweigerdt and his team to develop a special 8-blade impeller, optimized for the cultivation of stem cells as aggregates. With this impeller and our DASbox bioprocess controller, he recently achieved more than 35 million cells/mL after just seven days of cultivation.

The collaboration with our customers is an essential part of the Eppendorf DNA. It is made possible by the experience of our sales, service and in-field application teams, that are active globally in all regions. Your expertise drives us, your challenges inspire us. Let’s collaborate to find solutions that work for you.
