Venous thromboembolism diagnosed incident cases to reach 1.71 million across 7MM in 2034, forecasts GlobalData

The burden of diagnosed incident cases of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in the seven major markets (7MM*) is expected to increase at an annual growth rate (AGR) of 1.41% from 1.5 million in 2024 to 1.71 million cases in 2034, forecasts GlobalData, a leading intelligence and productivity platform.

GlobalData’s latest report, “Venous Thromboembolism: Epidemiology Forecast to 2034,” estimates that in 2034, the US will have the highest number of diagnosed incident cases of VTE across the 7MM with 1,084,000 cases. The 5EU** and Japan are estimated to have nearly 582,000 and 46,000 diagnosed incident cases of VTE in 2034, respectively.

Alia Rafiq, Senior Epidemiologist at GlobalData, comments: “The overall diagnosed incident cases of VTE will increase across all the 7MM, with the largest number of cases to be observed in the US. This is likely attributed to the improved diagnostics and changes in the underlying population demographics across these markets.”

VTE is comprised of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE). VTE attacks occur in people of all ages and both sexes. However, most diagnosed incident cases occur in older age. In the 7MM, the diagnosed incidence of VTE was highest in those aged 80 years and older and was slightly higher in women than men. The high incidence rates of PE and DVT in older age groups is likely a consequence of increased immobility, hospitalization, and surgeries (such as knee and hip replacement).

Compared with GlobalData’s previous VTE epidemiological report, there have been notable changes in the estimated number of medically ill discharges at risk of VTE, and the total number of hip and knee replacements. In the 7MM, approximately 14.5 million medically ill discharges were at risk of VTE in 2024 among those aged 40 years and older. Additionally, the total number of hip replacements for the 7MM and total number of knee replacements for all the 7MM except Japan are expected to increase from 2024 to 2034.

Rafiq concludes: “Those undergoing hip and knee replacements are at increased risk of developing VTE, and the predicted increase in replacement numbers highlights the importance of providing the appropriate prophylaxis to this growing patient population to prevent a further increase in VTE incidence.”
