The human immune system is a key line of defence against foreign pathogens. AAb production is an important indicator of autoimmune diseases but is not exclusive to these conditions since AAbs are also present in many other diseases and have been increasingly reported to be detectable many years before the manifestation of symptoms. AAbs thus appear to be attractive biomarkers for the early diagnosis of disease. Farhanah Aziz and Jonathan Blackburn of Sengenics analyse why AAbs are invaluable targets that are useful not only in the diagnosis of disease but also in development of new therapeutic interventions.
