Byome Derma Turns Beauty Stores into Microbiome Mini-Labs

What if beauty stores became a scientific lab? A 3-minute in-store test brings scientific skin diagnostics to the point of sale – matching consumers with products based on their skin microbiome.

  • €650 billion: Global cosmetics market
  • Nearly 1.5 million tons of cosmetics discarded each year (70% of purchased products)
  • 3 minutes to analyse the microbiome in-store
  • 5,000+ microbiomes already analysed by Byome Labs
  • A measurable, personalised and evidence-based approach to skincare

What if the biggest barrier to cosmetic effectiveness wasn’t formulation, but product-skin mismatch? In a global market worth over €650 billion, product selection still largely relies on intuition, due to the lack of truly objective diagnostic tools. Byome Labs, a French deeptech company born out of microbiology research, is changing that paradigm with Byome Derma, a skin microbiome diagnostic solution designed for use directly in-store. Using test strips inspired by rapid antigen tests and an AI-powered mobile app developed with dermatologists, Byome Derma delivers a skin analysis in just minutes and recommends products based on scientific data, without the need for dedicated equipment. An evolution that could fundamentally redefine how consumers choose their beauty products, making microbiome diagnostics a new standard in beauty retail.

A biological diagnosis in minutes

The solution uses test strips inspired by rapid antigen tests, capable of analysing the balance of the skin microbiome, along with key inflammation markers, in just a few minutes. Using a simple sample, a mobile app analyses the results and generates a personalised skincare routine using artificial intelligence algorithms.

Unlike DNA sequencing-based microbiome tests, which require lab processing and days of analysis, Byome Derma provides a diagnosis in minutes, directly at the point of sale, with no logistics or specialised equipment required.

Turning stores into scientific diagnostic spaces

With Byome Derma, beauty stores evolve beyond traditional retail environments. They become spaces for scientific diagnostics, bringing objectivity to beauty advice and fundamentally transforming the customer experience. Within minutes, the solution connects a customer’s skin condition to a curated selection of compatible products, creating a seamless path from analysis to recommendation.

For retailers, this means a differentiated in-store experience and more relevant, data-driven guidance. Several global cosmetic groups are already in advanced discussions with Byome Labs to integrate the technology into their retail ecosystems.

“We are bringing scientific diagnostics into the point of sale. Tomorrow, every store will operate as a mini-lab, guiding consumers to the right products based on objectivemeasurable data,” said David Suissa, Founder and CEO of Byome Labs.

A performance driver for brands

By introducing measurable diagnostics, brands can improve the accuracy of recommendations, reduce unsatisfactory purchases and strengthen customer loyalty. At the point of sale, this translates into higher conversion rates by immediately directing customers toward products that match their skin profile, while reducing returns and drop-offs caused by unsuitable choices. Because the microbiome evolves over time, the test can be repeated, creating ongoing customer engagement and new opportunities for long-term relationships.

Reducing waste through smarter purchasing

By replacing trial-and-error with a data-driven biological approach, Byome Derma helps guide consumers toward products that are truly compatible with their skin. In a market where a significant share of cosmetics is abandoned due to poor fit, this approach has the potential to significantly reduce waste associated with “trial-based” purchases. By bringing objectivity to decision-making at the point of sale, Byome Derma turns a widespread environmental challenge into a tangible optimisation lever for both brands and consumers.

deeptech company entering a new phase of growth

Founded in 2023, Byome Labs combines expertise in microbiology, immunology and artificial intelligence to decode the skin microbiome. The company has already analysed over 5,000 microbiomes and tested over 200 cosmetic products, building a unique database linking microbial profiles to product compatibility. Following a recent €3.6 million funding round, Byome Labs is accelerating the industrialisation of its solution, with large-scale deployment across retail networks planned from 2026.
